Gone Series V, 2019. Photography edit.

The Gone Series looks at the loss and disappearance of corals reefs, putting emphasis on individual corals and their beauty. Photography and digital editing is used to remove the corals from their natural environments and isolate them, leaving negative space behind. The lack of colour in both parts of the edit suggests the suffering of both the coral and the environment around it.

Bleaching is a term used when corals lose their colour and eventually die. The colour comes from an algae called zooxanthellae that lives on the surface of corals, which is a food source for the corals. When corals are stressed, either from too high temperatures, acidified waters or other factors, they will expel the algae or the algae will die, leaving the corals bone white and without food.
