What Remains, 2019. Bleach and Ink on 10m roll of Cartridge paper.
This project is about studying and understanding corals and coral bleaching using drawing. Through lots of study visits to museums, aquariums, specialist collections, and a coral breeding centre, a portfolio of drawings has been born. Form, texture, materiality, and individualism have all been explored in order to more fully understand corals not just visually but scientifically. This technique of using drawing to understand biology has been used for hundreds of years. Now with photography (which is more accurate) drawing is used less, however, an intimacy with the creatures has been lost through this process.
Each coral is made up of thousands/millions of polyps, which have built the structure of the coral from limestone (calcium carbonate).
